Whether you’re looking for a stay-cation this summer or a day-trip to satisfy your kids’ boredom during the summer holidays, look no further than Bristol. Situated in the beautiful West Country, Bristol boasts a vast amount of listed buildings and is such a welcoming city, making it perfect for a visit! What to do in Bristol I hear you ask? Read on and see for yourself!
Firstly, this summer really is the best time to visit Bristol as not only will the weather be more favourable, but there is also the Shaun The Sheep trail featuring the beautiful Laura Ashley sculpture, Cecilia! Part of the Shaun in the City trail which is organised by Wallace & Gromit’s Children’s Foundation, Cecilia is part of a 70-strong group of b-ewe-tiful sculptures, designed by celebrities and artists, all dotted around iconic locations around Bristol. By using the official app, you can take your children on a fantastic excursion around Bristol to find all the wonderful Shauns. Don’t think it’s just for kids, however; the sculptures prove very popular with adults, too (believe us, we saw many adults enjoying the trail!). You can read more about how Cecilia was made and why the design was chosen here. I think you’ll agree that the artist who painted Cecilia, Sarah Jane Richards, has done a fantastic job.
Another important date for the diary in Bristol is the International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta. Not only is the event free, it is also Europe’s largest ballooning event and most definitely a wonderful sight to behold. Taking place on 6th-9th August, the event even features glowing hot air balloons to light up the sky at night. Not sure if you’ll be able to make it? Don’t worry, the balloons can be seen all over the city – simply look up to the sky and admire!
An iconic landmark in Bristol is the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Created by the famous engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the bridge itself is a symbol of Bristol and much-loved by Bristolians! The surrounding Clifton area is also very pleasant with many Georgian buildings and excellent restaurants.
For you animal-lovers, Bristol has a great zoo which is home to many animals, including penguins and gorillas! Sure to be a hit with both children and adults alike, Bristol Zoo even has special events such as Spider Phobia courses for those of you who hate creepy crawlies (who doesn’t!?)!
Last but most certainly not least, Bristol is lucky enough to have two Laura Ashley stores. It would be rude not to pop in, right? Featuring all of the Laura Ashley favourites from fabric to fashion and furniture, you will be leaving Bristol with the best souvenirs!
