MAKE A HANDFUL OF FINGER PUPPETS BY THE MAKE LOUNGE

Contemporary Craft Workshops The Make Lounge show your how to make finger puppets!

Finger puppets are incredibly simple to make – start with a basic shape then all the fun is in the decorating!

Materials Needed:

Small scraps of fabric or felt

Scissors

Needle

Thread

Fabric glue

Decorative elements (e.g. ribbons, buttons, beads, pipe cleaners, googly eyes, sequins)

Instructions for Basic Puppet

Cut two puppet ‘body’ pieces (for the front and back) from fabric or felt. Then, use the following instructions to customise the basic shape to make a girl, man, rabbit or parrot.

To Make the Rabbit:

1. On the front of one cut body piece, glue a pair of googly eyes. For the nose, stitch on a small black button.

2. For the teeth, cut one pair of small squares from white felt. Affix with glue just below the nose.

3. For the bunny ears, cut 2 x 10cm lengths of white pipe cleaner and bend each in half. Lay these at the top of the puppet front, pointing downwards and hand stitch in place. (See image for guidance)

4. Place right sides of two body pieces together, matching edges. Stitch all the way around the curved edge, using a 5mm seam allowance and leaving the bottom edge open. Turn the puppet right sides out and press.

To Make The Girl:

1. Place right sides of two cut body pieces together, matching edges. Stitch all the way around the curved edge, using a 5mm seam allowance and leaving the bottom edge open. Turn the puppet right sides out and press.

2. Stick on a pair of googly eyes. Cut a pair of lips from red felt. Affix to the puppet just below the eyes.

3. For her hair, cut a 14cm length of black pipe cleaner. Curve the ends around your finger to create a ‘curl’ then stitch the pipe cleaner to the top of the ‘head’ to hold in place.

4. Next, cut a bow shape from red felt then glue to the hair.

5. Finally, cut a flared skirt shape out of floral fabric, approximately 4cm wide at the top and 8cm wide at the bottom. Hand stitch to the front of the puppet, being careful not to sew through both layers!

To Make the Man:

1. Place right sides of two cut body pieces together, matching edges. Stitch all the way around the curved edge, using a 5mm seam allowance and leaving the bottom edge open. Turn the puppet right sides out and press.

2. Stick on a pair of googly eyes.

3. For the moustache, cut 1cm length of black pipe cleaner. For the hair, cut 5cm length of black pipe cleaner. Stitch in place.

4. Next, cut a bow tie shape from blue felt and affix with glue.

To Make the Parrot:Β

1. On the front of one cut body piece, glue a pair of googly eyes. Next, cut a small triangle of felt for the beak and affix with glue.

2. For the wings, cut 2 x 90cm lengths of pipe cleaners. Bend these in half and place onto the puppet front, pointing downwards (like the bunny ears, see text above).

4. Next, cut 3 x 4cm lengths of pipe cleaners in different colours, representing head feathers. Again, place these on the front of the puppet, pointing inwards. (NB: You may need to pin or tack these with tape to hold them in place while you sew.) Stitch down all of the pipe cleaners, double stitching if needed to fasten securely.

5. Place right sides of cut body pieces together, matching edges. Stitch all the way around the curved edge, using a 5mm seam allowance and leaving the bottom edge open. Turn the puppet right sides out and press.
