Design Service expert Kerry reveals her top tips to making your space to look larger using paint. read more
When faced with decorating a small space, even the most simple choices can make a significant impact—especially when it comes to using paint. Whether you’re new to decorating or planning on overhauling your space, choosing a certain colour scheme or opting to paint your skirting board in a clever way, can both create the illusion of space.
We enrolled Kerry, our Design Service expert to reveal her simple steps to enhancing your space with her top painting tips.
Choose light colours
Choosing a light colour palette of creams, pastels and neutrals will convert a small space into a seemingly bigger living area. These brighter shades are more light reflective, making the room appear airy and spacious. If neutrals aren’t your thing, pick a cool-toned shade like the icy Pale Colbalt which visually looks as though walls are receding, perfect for bathrooms or bedrooms where you want to unwind.
Paint your walls two different shades
If you fancy bringing a creative accent to the room, don’t feel restricted by the neutral colour themes. Why not paint the walls two different shades? Painting your walls two different shades is ideal for adding depth to the room, just remember to keep the darker shade nearer to the floor.
Look to your architecture
Not to be overlooked are the mouldings in the room. Whilst they are typically painted white, this can visually break up the wall and in turn make it appear smaller. Instead, paint the skirting boards, dado rails or covering in the same shade as the walls to give an elongated look.
Paint the ceiling
Think of your ceiling as the fifth wall in the room, just as important as the four walls that surround you. Make sure to paint the ceiling a light and brightening colour, this will visually open the space above. If you are painting a sloped ceiling however, instead of using a different shade, paint it the same hue as the walls. This will blur the lines of where the slope meets the walls, erasing any shadows.
