Turn your spare bedroom into the perfect place for guests... read more
Having a spare bedroom is a godsend because it gives you valuable extra space. The issue we often find is that rather than using the room for its main purpose it can often become a dumping ground for those bits you can’t find anywhere else to store. When you have guests over though it’s great to be able to use the space for them which is why we’re thrilled the lovely Sophie from Meet The Taylors shows us how to create a welcoming spare bedroom for any extra visitors…
Our spare bedroom has been a real mixed bag room – storage, dressing room, an office, you name it.
I always seemed to have an excuse to put visitors off staying overnight but with family and friends living further afield, it was time to create a cosy and welcoming spare bedroom that we could be proud of.
The bedroom is all neutral colours – cream walls and carpet and as the room was just a spruce up, we decided to keep it that way. The room has always been “themed” around Cornwall, as it’s one of our favourite holiday destinations, with accessories and art in blues and greens so I wanted to expand within that colour scheme. I adore the new Laura Ashley Duck Egg Damask range and was delighted to choose some items from the collection to complement our space.
I tend to keep white bed linen in all three bedrooms which I love but it can sometimes feel a little clinical. With the cold nights drawing in, I wanted to add some warmth. The Dylan Duck Egg Checked Cotton Throw works perfectly and adds some real texture. Topped off with the coordinating Dylan Duck Egg Cushion, the bed looks so inviting and cosy, whenever I go in the room I’m tempted to climb in and snuggle up myself!
I really like statement lamps in a room, I think the eye is drawn to them as soon as you walk in. I was so pleased to find the Marina Jar Complete Lamp. It has a lovely neutral shade and the beautiful glass jar base means you can change what you display inside it. I’m going to use shells and sand in the summer months and to celebrate us heading into Autumn I’ve added a selection of fallen leaves my little boy helped me collect. I love that it makes the lamp a versatile home accessory. I’m thinking about displaying baubles inside it for December – watch this space!
I love vintage looking accessories and the gorgeous Set of 2 Brass and Mirror Hexagonal Trinket Trays are such a lovely addition to any room. They look so pretty holding a candle or little vase of flowers, as well as allowing you to display your favourite jewellery. I may even steal these for my dressing table in our master bedroom!
Last but not least, you can’t welcome guests without a beautiful smelling room. The Sweet Pea and Freesia range is simply stunning, so fresh. The Sweet Pea and Freesia Reed Diffuser and Scented Candle are a welcome addition to the room and actually scent the whole of our upstairs space, it’s really inviting.
I hope you have enjoyed how we have turned our spare room from multi-purpose storage to a welcoming and cosy spare bedroom. I love it so much I may even crawl in there for a snooze!
We are planning a house move for later this year so I’m sure there will be many more projects ahead of us in the near future.
